While Sunbathers Escaped Attack, Widely-Shared Picture Shows Rescuer Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, describes the famous coast as her personal space. On that fateful weekend night, she, like many local residents, noticed loud noises echoing around the community.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Stepping out of her apartment, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw told her a crisis was unfolding.

Positioned on the avenue, speaking to a couple who had run up the slope still dripping wet, she heard someone approaching behind her. It was a lifeguard, sprinting towards Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. He was alone heading in the opposite way that everyone was trying to get away from, carrying that big kit and unshod … He’s running at something that surely every part of you would instruct you to move in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just fully pedal to the metal running.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage In the Wake of Crisis

The photo that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous acts of valour in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, law enforcement and paramedics caring for many those hurt.

Collective Response and Solidarity

Doolan’s account was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the site of the violence becoming a temporary treatment center. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen responding bravely, for instance entering the ocean to assist people who were struggling.

After the tragedy, messages of appreciation were shared. A social media message conveyed appreciation for the individuals who showed that “kindness will always conquer darkness”.

The squad of beach patrol later shared a statement, saying they were “processing what happened”.

“We are grateful all for your supportive words and solidarity. We are touched by the kindness for our personnel,” the organization wrote. “In time, we will share our stories in the aim that it supports those involved.”

Council Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many professional lifeguards, remarked that the staff acted heroically from the instant the incident started right into late that night.

“We have heard so many emotional accounts, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” stated a mayor.

“Our lifeguards demonstrate altruism every day in ensuring our world-famous coastlines safe for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on that evening should be highly praised.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the terror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much good we have seen in the presence of such darkness.”
