US Officials Announce Apprehension in Disrupted Year-End Explosive Scheme Near Southern California
Federal agents stated on Monday that they had successfully thwarted a comprehensive plot to explode IEDs at numerous facilities run by two American companies on New Year's Eve in the LA region. The move resulted from the detainment of people associated with an extremist faction advocating for anti-capitalist and anti-establishment beliefs.
Those Arrested Apprehended During Desert Practice
The four suspects were taken into custody last Friday in the remote area situated east of Los Angeles at the time they were reportedly rehearsing their proposed strike. Prosecutors presented overhead surveillance video to reporters, that depicted the group moving a sizeable black device to a workspace. Law enforcement stressed that the detainments were made prior to the individuals could construct a working bomb.
Names of the Accused Made Public
According to the public criminal complaint, the four people named are Audrey Illeene Carroll, 30; Zachary Aaron Page, 32 years old; Gaffield, 24; and Tina Lai, who is 41. The group are understood to be from the LA region.
Alleged Driving Force and Group Affiliations
Even though authorities did not directly describe a rationale, they stated the suspects are part of a splinter group known as the Turtle Island Liberation Front. This entity allegedly advocates for "workers to revolt and resist against corporate power," as per the court papers.
The charges comprise conspiracy to commit a crime and having a destructive device. Prosecutors stated that additional counts are likely in the coming weeks.
Details of the Alleged "Midnight Sun Operation"
Officials said that one of the suspects had devised a step-by-step plan last month to attack at least five business locations across Southern California on New Year's Eve. The intended sites were described as "similar to Amazon" fulfillment centers.
"The plan was explicit," an official said. "It included detailed directions to build IEDs … and identified numerous objectives across the county of Orange and Los Angeles."
Based on the investigation and the complaint, the plot called for planting backpacks filled with sophisticated pipe bombs that were set to be set off at the same time at midnight on New Year's Eve at five places. New Year's Eve was seen as an opportune time because the document indicated "celebratory explosions will be going off at this time so blast noises will be less likely to be heard."
An eight-page longhand plan, titled "OPERATION MIDNIGHT SUN," noted that further sites could be included. The sites were identified as assets and buildings operated by two separate corporations connected with operations affecting national and international trade.
Long-term Plans and Materials Seized
The criminal complaint also revealed that two members in the collective had talked about later attacks aimed at immigration enforcement personnel and vehicles with IEDs in 2026. One accused according to the complaint commented that such strikes "would take some of them out and scare the rest of them."
These plans were allegedly talked over both at an face-to-face assembly in Los Angeles and through an secure communication application.
Images included in the case file depict a isolated site with what investigators described as explosives-manufacturing components laid out on portable tables.
Official documents states that the group "carried explosive materials to the site, among them assorted sizes of plastic pipes, believed to be an oxidizer, charcoal briquettes, charcoal powder, powdered sulfur, and components to be used as igniters, and more."
The plan also had steps on how to manufacture the explosives and how to avoid leaving forensic clues that could be connected back to the individuals. The accused had in the recent past acquired components and other items, via acquisitions from e-commerce sites.
Apprehension and Subsequent Actions
Federal agents took action last week while the suspects were running through the operation in the remote area near a California town. "They had every item they were necessary to make an operational explosive device at that site," the attorney stated.
During served searches, officials allegedly discovered flyers for the Turtle Island Liberation Front at one individual's dwelling that called for "America Must Fall", and "Death to ICE". At another accused's residence, police discovered a duplicate of the elaborate attack blueprint.
The suspects were taken into custody peacefully. They were due to appear in court in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon.
