The White Sox Secure Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial $34 Million Contract.

In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the American League club have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a $34 million contract for the high-profile player.

Deal Structure and Player Perks

The agreement includes a substantial signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to salaries of $16 million for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the following year.

Importantly, Murakami's 2027 salary may grow based on performance achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for winning the MVP award.
  • Half a million dollars for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for placing fourth through 10th.
  • An identical bonus for winning the top rookie honor.

His deal also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent and grants him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the term. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.

Transfer Payment and Franchise History

As part of the transaction, Chicago must pay a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a additional payment of 15% triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese to suit up for the White Sox, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami during their time in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 on February 2nd, enters a young core of hitters in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a 60-102 season, placing at the bottom in the division but representing a significant improvement from the year before campaign.

A two-time Central League MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is famous for a record-breaking 2022 season where he launched 56 homers, surpassing the longstanding record for a player in Japan previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was limited to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Even with recording 64 times, he hit .273 with 22 home runs and 47 runs batted in.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. He started playing mainly at first, he has since transitioned to third.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's clutch hitting were on full display during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending double that brought home Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind 6-5 victory. The following day in the championship game against the United States, he slugged a game-tying shot in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 title triumph.

The power hitter is set to be unveiled at a media availability on the coming Monday.
