For much of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive inside a mental fortress forged from the past of Henry Creel. Their quest for an escape route in episode 6 leads them to experience a defining event from Henry's early years—a moment that may just hold the key to defeating him once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

Upon meeting Max in the world known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. A clever observation a viewing device found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry find an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the act wasn't just a defensive killing.

Similar to other plot points this season, the full story behind the mine shaft incident was first explored the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission

The play reveals the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who came back in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.

This man's son, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in remote Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to hand over to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. The man in the cavern was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is understood of his research, the case most likely held samples of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, leading to the awakening of his powers—abilities he would genetically impart to the kids Brenner would experiment on.

Another possibility, the case could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back after half a day fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he battles the whispers of a sinister presence, similar to how the character Will was possessed by the entity in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

His lasting fear linked to that memory shows how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. While he commands the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to fortify himself.

His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a key upper hand in the ultimate battle that awaits.
