Teacher Killed and 25 Girls Abducted in Armed Clash at Nigerian School
Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.
The gang of attackers stormed the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on Monday, authorities reported.
The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their hostel, authorities disclosed.
One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.
Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to cause panic.
Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the armed men then led a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.
The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and believed flight corridors.
In the last several years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have become frequent targets for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to request monetary settlements or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
