"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the Haim sisters?" a message reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

However, there remains one problem: I also wants to be the Haims' fourth member. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Several celebrated fans have also petitioned for the honor.

One thing is obvious a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the most iconic bands, they're a close unit. Their videos repeatedly show them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans told us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to form a group."

"And thus all is invited to be the next part of the family."

Grammy Nod

The trio have called into their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge milestone," says Alana. "However we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album emerged from a period of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The themes detail departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That newfound toughness called for a different sonic direction – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The trio's openness shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic misadventures.

One man ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international audience.

However the sister act will always be their number one focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
