Chainsaw Man Tops American Box Office in Opening Weekend
Did Sony achieved another hit? Coming after the box office performance of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in over $600 million worldwide, the latest Chainsaw Man film has surpassed the $100 million mark globally, reaching a global total of $108M during its debut. This movie surpassed Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its second week in movie houses, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere featuring the talented Jeremy Allen White ($9M).
Impressive U.S. and Global Performance
The work of Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a immediate sequel of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It earned $18.2M in North America after a robust $5.2 million Saturday earnings and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday take. Globally, the animated by MAPPA film added $14.7M across 46 international territories, bringing its global earnings to $60.4M through Sony distribution ($43.1 million international, $18.2 million in the U.S.). The studio has not yet revealed its complete box office tally.
Comparisons to Past Anime Hits
Promotional firm White Box Entertainment noted in prior discussions, drawing parallels between the film’s projected performance to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which grossed $34M in the U.S. and Canada in 2022 and debuted with a similar eighteen million dollars stateside. The new film's first weekend matches that marker, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar worldwide total currently tracks slightly below Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s $166.6M overall box office. Although it’s unlikely this Chainsaw Man film will match the earnings seen by mega hit the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a huge win for the distributor.
Marketing Campaigns Fuel Success
Sony and its subsidiary the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have skillfully used audience interaction to boost their leadership at the animated movie market. The Reze Arc advertising push began at the Anime Expo in LA in the month of July with a MAPPA panel, special events, and Pochita-themed pictures, followed by a significant involvement at the New York Comic Con featuring behind-the-scenes footage, audience giveaways, and additional MAPPA panels. Additionally, there was an exclusive fan screening for moviegoers and influencers alike after the concluding day of the convention.
Looking Ahead
2025 stands as a major time for anime, and for the studio, which has an additional anime film debuting this year in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
